Adaptive Dance Aide
The Black Mountain Center for the Arts (BMCA) offers the MoveAbility program—a welcoming and adaptable dance initiative for individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities, fostering movement, creativity, and self-expression in an inclusive, trauma-informed environment.
As a MoveAbility Classroom Assistant, you’ll support the lead instructor in creating a safe, joyful, and inclusive dance experience. Responsibilities include helping manage the class, encouraging participants, and contributing during special events and performances.
Responsibilities
- Support behavior and classroom management
- Encourage and engage students actively during movement activities
- Assist with basic progress tracking (simple data notes)
- Help during off-site performances and seasonal events
Qualifications:
- Attend a brief volunteer orientation and role briefing
- Commit to regular classes and selected events
- Provide your own transportation to the BMCA (225 W State St, Black Mountain, NC) and other venues
- Display empathy, patience, and positivity when working with all abilities
- Able to stand and move for at least an hour
Schedule: Mondays, September through mid-May
- MoveAbility 1 (ages 5–15): 5:30–6:15 PM
- MoveAbility 2 (ages 15+): 6:15–7:00 PM
- Optional brief check-ins before (5:15–5:30 PM) and after (7:00–7:15 PM) each class
- Occasional involvement with special events or performances
